Matangi School New Curriculum
The Matangi School Curriculum design allows teachers the scope to make interpretations in response to the particular learning needs, interests, and talents of individuals and groups of students in their classes. It involves considering the specific needs of the community in educating their students.
The Matangi Curriculum embraces collaboration, authentic learning experiences, flexibility, student centered learning, creativity, and connectivity.
Consultation Statement
The Community discussed the key values, visions and principles that they believed were important. The Matangi Graduate encompasses the vision, values and principles that we believe in for our students to be 21st Century learners.
Curriculum Coverage
As a Globally minded Environmental school, we identify with Environmental Education as well as the eight learning areas, as specified in the New Zealand Curriculum.
The Arts, Physical Education, Learning Languages and some aspects of Health, will be taught as separate learning areas and integrated, where appropriate. The learning areas of Science, Social Science, Health and Technology Years 1 – 6 will be taught using a conceptual inquiry approach and integrated, where appropriate. In the course of two years we will ensure full coverage of all strands in all learning areas according to the needs of our students.
There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, but the students of Matangi School have the opportunity to voice their topics of interest, and this helps the staff to plan accordingly.
Teachers are aware of the needs of their classes and individual students, and they cater for this by including a variety of different learning experiences.
Collaborative Planning
All teaching staff are involved in long term, collaborative planning of integrated units.
This planning helps to give even curriculum coverage, and is based on the needs and interests of the current students. Collaborative planning ensures consistency across the school, and teachers have seen the positive outcomes from this.
